Sunscreen Session IPA is a returning favorite that shows up just in time for early summer. The Swedish word lagom — meaning not too much, not too little, but just right — fits perfectly when describing a Session IPA.
There are a few stories about how India Pale Ale, or IPA, came to be. A popular one says the British added more hops and malt to their beer when shipping it to India in the 1700s, to keep it from spoiling on the long journey. More malt means more sugar, which means more alcohol — and both alcohol and hops help preserve. It’s not entirely accurate, but it makes sense and has stuck around. What’s true is that IPAs are usually stronger and hoppier than regular beers
In beer, just like in math, we use prefixes. If IPA is the unit, we can add things like Double, Imperial, or in this case: Session. The term comes from “drinking session” and points to a beer you can enjoy a few of without overdoing it. A Session IPA is simply a lighter version — with a lagom level of alcohol.
